Managing Christmas Arguments: A Guide to Surviving the Festive Feuds

Updated: Dec 20

Christmas is about peace on earth, right? Well, maybe… but for most of us, it’s also about surviving family arguments!

From sibling rivalries over the last roast potato to fiery debates about politics (and there’s no shortage of that this year!), Christmas clashes are practically a tradition in themselves. The good news? You’re not alone - and there are ways to manage the tricky moments so they don’t ruin your day.

Why Arguments Happen at Christmas

The festive season comes with high expectations, stress, and more time spent together than usual. Add in tiredness, too much food, and the occasional glass of wine, and it’s a recipe for tension.

But here’s the thing: arguments don’t mean you’re failing at Christmas—they’re a sign of being human. The trick is knowing how to handle them when they arise.

Tips for Managing Christmas Arguments
  • Avoid triggers when you can: If you know certain topics lead to rows, steer clear of them - especially at the dinner table. A quick change of subject can save a lot of stress!

  • Take a breather: Step outside, go for a walk, or take a moment to yourself if tensions start rising. A little space can help everyone cool down.

  • Let it go: Not every argument needs to be won. Sometimes, it’s better to agree to disagree and move on.

  • Make up quickly: A simple “I’m sorry” or a shared laugh can go a long way. Remember, it’s one day - don’t let a small argument ruin it all.

  • Focus on what matters: The food might get burnt; the jokes might fall flat and someone might storm off, but Christmas isn’t about perfection. It’s about being together (arguments and all).

Let’s be honest - family feuds are part of the festive experience for many of us. If you can, try to see the funny side. After all, these are the stories you could be laughing about in future years! I still recount the year my Mother stormed off - a combination of my forgetting to make bread sauce and buying the 'wrong mints for Christmas Day'!

So this Christmas, as tensions rise, remember: it’s normal, it’s human, and it’s survivable! Take a breath, keep perspective, and don’t be afraid to create a little peace where you can.
